Arrive at Tokyo airport and transfer to your hotel. After checking in, ease into the city with a quiet evening or head out to discover the neighbourhood around you. It’s your first taste of Japan, so make it whatever feels right.
Pick up your Hop-on, Hop-off bus pass and set out to explore Tokyo’s main districts. The route takes you through areas such as Asakusa, Shibuya, Harajuku, Shinjuku and Akihabara. Simply hop off at the stops that catch your eye, explore the neighbourhood and board the next bus when you’re ready to move on.
Head southwest for the Fuji and Hakone circuit. At Mount Fuji’s 5th Station, take in the dramatic mountain terrain, with lava fields, the Fuji Five Lakes and the lower forest line stretching across the landscape. Continue to Hakone for a ride on the Hakone Ropeway over the Owakudani geothermal zone. Steam rises from the volcanic crater below, with sulphur-scented air adding to the otherworldly atmosphere. End the day with a scenic cruise across Lake Ashi, surrounded by Hakone’s mountain landscape.
Spend the day discovering four of Tokyo’s most distinctive modern attractions. Take in the city from Tokyo Tower’s Main Observatory, 150 metres above the streets, or head to Shibuya Sky for its open-air rooftop and sweeping views over Shibuya Crossing. At TeamLab Planets in Toyosu, walk barefoot through immersive digital installations shaped by water, light and reflection. Tokyo Skytree offers another perspective, with expansive views stretching across the city and beyond.
Give yourself a day to step away from Tokyo’s cityscape and into the colourful world of Disney. Tokyo Disneyland brings together five themed lands, from the adventurous setting of Adventureland to the storybook charm of Fantasyland and the playful world of Toontown. Your Standard Pass covers entry and access to the park’s attractions, while live entertainment and character appearances add plenty to discover throughout the day.
Check out of your Tokyo hotel and board the Shinkansen to Kyoto (about 2 hours away). The journey offers a chance to rest and watch the landscape change as you travel toward Japan’s cultural heart. After checking in at your Kyoto hotel, the afternoon is free for your first taste of the city. Explore the narrow streets around Gion or wander through Higashiyama, full of traditional architecture and historic temples.
Spend the day exploring two of the region’s most memorable destinations on a guided Kyoto and Nara tour. Fushimi Inari Shrine is known for its seemingly endless rows of vermilion torii gates, which wind up the wooded hillside behind the shrine. In Nara, wander through the park where sika deer roam freely (they famously bow to guests to ask for food!) before continuing to Todai-ji Temple, home to one of Japan’s largest bronze Buddha statues.
Travel from Kyoto to Osaka by road (about a 40-minute journey). With the rest of the day free, take the opportunity to see a different side of the city beyond its best-known sights. Wander through the nostalgic streets of Shinsekai or browse the stalls at Kuromon Ichiba Market. You could also head towards Tempozan for a change of scenery by the waterfront.
See more of Osaka with a guided tour covering the city’s key sights, including Osaka Castle and Dotonbori. The Osaka Amazing Pass then opens up more possibilities for the rest of the day, with unlimited city subway and bus travel and entry to more than 40 attractions. Use it to explore further, whether you fancy the retro character of Shinsekai and Tsutenkaku Tower or a visit to Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan.
Take a day trip north from Osaka to Amanohashidate, travelling through the Kyoto hills towards Miyazu Bay on the Sea of Japan coast. The pine-covered sandbar stretches across the bay and is traditionally viewed from Kasamatsu Park in an unusual upside-down perspective. From there, continue to the Miyama district. Here, clusters of well-preserved thatched farmhouses offer a glimpse into the traditional rural life of Japan.
Enjoy your final breakfast in Japan before your private transfer to Osaka airport. As the journey comes to an end, take a moment to look back on the places you have seen and the experiences you have collected.

Amanohashidate is a 3.6-kilometre pine-covered sandbar stretching across Miyazu Bay on the Sea of Japan coast. The best time to visit Japan for a varied sightseeing experience is generally spring or autumn. Late March to early April is popular for cherry blossoms, while October and November bring comfortable weather and autumn foliage across places such as Kyoto and Nara. Both periods are busy, so Japan holiday packages should be booked well in advance.
A full day at Tokyo Disneyland includes access to the park’s five themed lands: Adventureland, Westernland, Fantasyland, Toontown and Tomorrowland. A Standard Pass provides park entry and access to the attractions included with the ticket. Live entertainment, parades and character appearances take place throughout the day, although some experiences may require separate arrangements or charges.
Mount Fuji’s 5th Station sits at approximately 2,305 metres above sea level, so temperatures can be noticeably cooler than in Tokyo. The area offers views of the surrounding mountain landscape and, when conditions are clear, the Fuji Five Lakes region. Bring an extra layer even during warmer months, as weather conditions can change quickly at higher elevations.
Yes, carrying some Japanese yen is useful in Kyoto. Many smaller restaurants, traditional shops, temple stalls and shrines may still prefer cash, particularly in less touristy areas. Cards and IC-based payments are widely accepted in larger shops and transport networks, but keeping some cash on hand can make smaller purchases and temple visits easier.
